Yormandi

Details

Diet
Carnivore / predator (ambush, cave-dwelling) — uses its tongue to taste the air and detect prey.
Habitat
Underground excavation caves beneath the ASD Onyx Facilities, scattered across the Stanton system (intro missions point to moons like Calliope, Lyria, Cellin); the fight is in a sealed boss arena off Onyx Site B.

AI Overview

Compiled by AI from community sources — may be incomplete or inaccurate; verify before relying on it.

A massive, serpentine apex predator that lairs in the excavation caves beneath the ASD Onyx Facilities of the Stanton system — the game's first true creature "boss," fought in pairs and harvested for its prized eyes and tongue.

Appearance

The yormandi is a huge, snake-like creature rather than a worm. Its body is studded with roughly eight glowing weak points (often described as electric "scars") that flare when struck, and it sports prominent eyes and a long, sensitive tongue that it uses to taste the air and track prey from a distance. The design grew out of two alternative "Valakkar" concepts shown at CitizenCon 2024, with the studio deliberately steering the final creature toward something more serpentine ("snakey") than worm-like.

Behavior & temperament

Highly aggressive. The encounter is fought against a pair of yormandi that lunge at players and unleash lightning- and plasma-based attacks. Documented attack types include a Plasma Overcharge that electrifies the ground for area damage, a Smash Down ground slam aimed at cover objects, a close-range Lightning Bite that can one-shot a solo player, a Spit Attack that briefly exposes the inside of its mouth as a bonus weak point, and an AoE shockwave. A second yormandi spawns once the first takes heavy damage, after which plasma attacks become more frequent and intense.

Where to find

The yormandi inhabits a vast underground cave system discovered during excavation work beneath the ASD (Associated Science and Development) Onyx Facilities. These facilities are scattered across the Stanton system; introductory Onyx missions typically point players to Stanton moons such as Calliope, Lyria, or Cellin. The fight itself takes place in a sealed boss arena off Site B (the excavation zone beneath the main building). Reaching it requires manual navigation through the research wing/Site B — there is no dedicated mission/contract that drops you at the boss directly. An "express" shortcut exists via yellow keycards (found in blue loot boxes) that open air vents and locked doors to bypass the enemy gauntlet. Once you enter the arena the airlock seals, so a downed player cannot re-enter that run.

Combat & danger

Treat it as a co-op boss. A duo is the sweet spot and three to four players is recommended for efficient runs; solo is possible but very risky because the Lightning Bite can instant-kill. Strategy: stay behind the breakable rock cover, keep moving, and target the glowing weak points (and the exposed inner mouth during spit attacks) to hear the tell-tale "squelch" and see splash effects on a clean hit. Plasma batteries scattered around the arena can be used to temporarily stun the worms. Go prone to duck under AoE shockwaves, and heal immediately after any hit to avoid a lethal follow-up. A critical hazard: amber/flashing warning lights signal a "kill wave" that destroys dropped loot and wipes players caught in the area, so extract your loot before it triggers.

Loot & drops

From each yormandi corpse you can harvest two eyes and one tongue (extracted via the harvest prompt or a tractor beam). The Yormandi Eye is a small harvestable (5 kg) whose antibodies are valued by medical researchers. The Yormandi Tongue is a much larger trophy item (size 1, ~30 kg, ~5.6 × 1.5 × 1.5 m cargo footprint) prized by Empire-wide culinary enthusiasts. These items are turned in to the vendor Wikelo, who currently is the only source of binoculars/rangefinders in the build. Example Wikelo contracts: "Want Better Eyes" (2x Yormandi Eye + 1x Yormandi Tongue + a Wikelo Favor → XDL "Mark I" Monocular Rangefinder) and "Yormandi Gun" (6x Yormandi Eye + 3x Yormandi Tongue + a Fresnel Energy LMG → the Fresnel "Yormandi" LMG). Community guides estimate roughly 20-30k aUEC per run from the creature loot plus crafting mats and reputation gains.

Hunting tips

Bring heavy armor for survivability and a powerful energy LMG (the Pulverizer or the Fresnel Energy LMG are recommended) for the boss, with a lighter rifle/SMG (e.g. an FS9) and a sidearm (e.g. a P6-LR) for clearing trash mobs en route. Pack a med gun, med pens, plenty of ammo, and a tractor beam (the tractor beam makes harvesting and hauling the bulky tongue much easier). Fight from cover, exploit the arena's plasma batteries to stun, and prioritize the eyes/electric weak spots.

Lore & discovery

Per in-fiction lore, leaked ASD (Associated Science and Development Group) documents describe a major containment operation deep within an Onyx Facility, where excavation work breached a large underground cave system and crews encountered a large, dangerous creature. The yormandi is noted for an extraordinarily robust immune system that reacts to unknown pathogens almost instantly, which is why its antibody-rich eyes are coveted by medical researchers. Out-of-fiction, the yormandi is Star Citizen's first dedicated creature boss, introduced around Alpha 4.3.2. It is built on largely new creature tech: a new rig and animation set, breakable weak spots, breakable rock cover, serpent IK solvers, interruptible behaviors, AI use of beam weapons, and creatures that can have awareness/context of one another — tech CIG has said it intends to reuse for future creatures.

Trivia

- Its design descends from alternative Valakkar concepts shown at CitizenCon 2024; CIG chose a snake form over a worm form. - There is a branded reward weapon, the Fresnel "Yormandi" LMG, obtainable by turning its harvested parts in to Wikelo. - Despite being snake-like, many guides and players colloquially still call the encounter the "Yormandi worms."
